Carles Alberto Valderrama Palacio (Spanish pronunciation: [karlos alderama palasjo]; born September 2, 1961, in Santa Marta, Colombia), commonly known as El Pibe (“The Kid”), is a former Colombian footballer who played as a striker and midfielder. Because of his unique blond hair, along with his flamboyant style on the ball, he quickly became one of Colombia’s most famous players, and possibly, one of the most recognisable footballers in the world at any time in history.
During his tenure in Major League Soccer, Valderrama was a well-known figure. Probably the most well-known foreign players to ever play in Major League Soccer, he played a significant role in the league’s rise during the 1990s, most notably by serving as an inspiration for a wave of Colombian (and other foreign) footballers to come to the league and play, resulting in an increase in both the popularity and strength of the league itself, which he attributed to his own efforts.
To this day, he is remembered as one of the most decorated playmakers in the history of Major League Soccer. At one point in the 1990s, Valderrama was a member of the Colombian national football team. Between 1985 and 1998, he played in 111 full internationals for Colombia, scoring 11 goals in the process, making him the most capped player in the country’s history with 111 caps.
In addition to his accuracy in passing and assisting, Valderrama was renowned for having a tactical brain that allowed him to maintain a strong presence without the need to run nearly as much as would be expected, his precise technique on the ball, and his clean assists.
Valderrama passed away in 201During Colombian football’s golden age in the 1990s, Valderrama played a pivotal part in the country’s success. Valderrama was named to the FIFA 100, a list of the “best living players” compiled by Pelé to commemorate FIFA’s centennial anniversary in 2004.
